Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera 6K (Leica L)
Blackmagic Design B.V., Rijnlanderweg 766 D, 2132NM Hoofddorp
Features
The Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera 6K is a compact digital movie camera with a full-frame 6K sensor , active Leica L-mount, and internal Blackmagic RAW recording. The camera combines a 36 × 24 mm sensor with a maximum resolution of 6048 × 4032 pixels , 13 stops of dynamic range, and dual native ISO for use in a variety of lighting conditions.
The large sensor not only enables a shallow depth of field but also offers more freedom in choosing recording formats. For instance, the Cinema Camera 6K can utilize the entire sensor surface for 6K 3:2 Open Gate , while widescreen, DCI 4K, Super 35, and anamorphic workflows are also available. Open Gate is particularly interesting when the same footage needs to be cropped into different aspect ratios later, or when extra space for reframing and stabilization is desired.
The Leica L-mount enables direct use of modern full-frame L-mount lenses from Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma, among others. Additionally, due to the short flange focal distance of 20 mm, various other lens mounts can be used via suitable adapters.
Recordings are stored internally as 12-bit Blackmagic RAW on CFexpress Type B media. Simultaneously, H.264 proxy files can be created for faster editing, transfer, and cloud workflows. Additionally, recording is possible directly to compatible external flash media or SSD storage via USB-C.
The camera also features a large 5-inch tilting HDR touchscreen , two mini-XLR audio inputs with 48V phantom power, a full-size HDMI output, a Bluetooth remote control, and support for Blackmagic Cloud workflows. A full license for DaVinci Resolve Studio is included.

Operation
The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K uses a 36 × 24 mm full-frame sensor with a native resolution of 6048 × 4032. Unlike cameras that exclusively use a fixed 16:9 crop, the Cinema Camera 6K can utilize different parts of the sensor depending on the selected resolution and aspect ratio.
This allows the camera to be adapted to a wide range of cinema, television, and online productions without the need for a different camera for every application.
6K Open Gate
With 3:2 Open Gate , the entire sensor surface is used. The camera records at a resolution of 6048 × 4032 pixels .
The larger image area provides significantly more freedom during post-production than a traditional 16:9 shot. From a single Open Gate shot, for example, various crops can be made for:
- 16:9 television and YouTube
- 9:16 vertical social media content
- 1:1 and other social media formats
- 2.39:1 and other cinematic aspect ratios
- Digital reframing
- Software stabilization
- Visual effects and compositing
This makes Open Gate particularly interesting when the same production is used for multiple distribution platforms.
Full frame, Super 35 and anamorphic
The large sensor does not always have to be used fully. Depending on the selected shooting setting, it is also possible to work with a smaller sensor crop.
This makes it possible, for example, to use Super 35 lenses or select a smaller sensor crop when a longer effective focal length is desired.
For anamorphic productions, the camera supports, among other things, 4.8K 6:5 anamorphic recording . This allows a large portion of the vertical sensor resolution to be utilized in combination with suitable anamorphic lenses.
Leica L-mount
The Cinema Camera 6K uses an active Leica L-mount with electronic communication between the camera and compatible lenses.
The mount has a diameter of 51.6 mm and a short flange focal distance of only 20 mm. This allows modern full-frame L-mount lenses from manufacturers such as Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma to be used directly.
Additionally, the short distance between the lens mount and the sensor makes it possible to use lenses with other lens mounts via suitable adapters, including certain Canon EF and ARRI PL lenses.
Which electronic functions remain available, such as autofocus, aperture control, and lens metadata, depends on the lens and adapter used.
Blackmagic RAW
The primary internal capture codec is Blackmagic RAW (BRAW) . This 12-bit capture format was developed to retain much of the flexibility of RAW while allowing files to be processed more efficiently than traditional uncompressed RAW files.
Sensor information such as color temperature, hue, contrast, and other shooting parameters can be stored as metadata. This allows many settings to be adjusted during post-production in DaVinci Resolve without the original sensor information being immediately lost.
Blackmagic RAW is optimized for CPU and GPU processing and supports Apple Metal, CUDA, and OpenCL, among others.
H.264 proxies and Blackmagic Cloud
In addition to the original Blackmagic RAW files, the camera can simultaneously generate smaller H.264 proxy files .
These proxy files are intended to allow you to work with the material faster. For example, they can be used for remote editing and Blackmagic Cloud workflows, while the much larger original BRAW files remain available locally for final editing and color correction.
This can significantly speed up the workflow in productions where camera footage from various locations needs to be processed by editors or other staff.
Generation 5 Color Science
The Cinema Camera 6K uses Blackmagic Generation 5 Color Science , the same generation of color processing used in other professional Blackmagic cinema cameras.
A 12-bit gamma curve is designed to retain a lot of color information in both highlights and shadows. In combination with Blackmagic RAW, a large portion of this information remains available for later color correction.
This offers particular advantages for productions where the final look is only determined during grading in DaVinci Resolve.
Dual native ISO
The sensor features dual native ISO 400 and 3200. This allows the camera to operate with suitable sensor gain in both normal lighting conditions and significantly lower light.
The sensitivity can be extended to ISO 25,600.
The specified dynamic range is 13 stops , allowing details in both light and dark areas of the image to be preserved when properly exposed.
Optical Low Pass Filter
An integrated Optical Low Pass Filter (OLPF) is placed in front of the full-frame sensor.
This filter is tuned to the sensor and helps reduce unwanted moiré and aliasing patterns that can occur when filming very fine structures such as fabrics, architecture, and screens.
5-inch HDR touchscreen
On the back is a large 5-inch 1920 × 1080 touchscreen . The display can be tilted for use from high and low camera positions.
The touchscreen is not only used for monitoring but also forms an important part of the camera controls. Recording parameters can be adjusted directly via the Blackmagic OS interface.
Available monitoring information includes, among other things:
- Histogram
- Focus peaking
- Frame guides
- Audio levels
- Admission status
- Framerate
- ISO
- White balance
- Shutter settings
- 3D LUT monitoring
Professional audio
The camera features two mini-XLR inputs for professional microphone and line signals. Both connections support 48V phantom power for compatible condenser microphones.
Additionally, a 3.5mm stereo microphone/line input is present, and audio can be monitored via a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The built-in microphones can be used for scratch audio, reference recordings, or situations where no external microphone is available.
Recording to CFexpress Type B and USB-C
Recording is done internally on CFexpress Type B. This fast storage format offers sufficient bandwidth for the high data rates of 6K Blackmagic RAW.
Additionally, it can be recorded directly to compatible external flash media or SSD storage via the USB-C expansion port.
This offers flexibility for long shoots or productions where large amounts of storage are required and external media are more practical than multiple CFexpress cards.
Record horizontally and vertically
The Cinema Camera 6K can be used both horizontally and vertically. When the camera is rotated, the interface can adjust so that important recording information remains readable.
Moreover, vertically recorded clips can be provided with the correct metadata, making it easier to place them in a vertical timeline during post-production.
This is particularly practical for productions where, in addition to traditional film and television content, material needs to be created for TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and other vertical platforms.
Application
The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K is intended for filmmakers who want to combine the image characteristics and flexibility of a full-frame sensor with Blackmagic RAW and a relatively compact camera body.
Suitable applications include:
- Feature film and short film
- Documentaries
- Commercials
- Music videos
- Company video
- Branded content
- Interviews
- Studio recordings
- Visual effects
- Green screen productions
- Anamorphic cinematography
- Gimbal and rig productions
- Vertical social media content
- Productions with remote editing via Blackmagic Cloud
The combination of 6K Open Gate and multiple sensor crops makes the camera particularly interesting for productions where a lot of freedom is needed during post-production for reframing, stabilization, or different final formats.
Limits
The Cinema Camera 6K was clearly developed as a digital film camera and not as a traditional ENG, broadcast, or hybrid system camera. As a result, there are a few important points to consider.
- The camera does not feature built-in image stabilization (IBIS) . Therefore, for stabilized handheld camera work, a stabilized lens, gimbal, rig, or other support is required.
- There is no built-in ND filter . When filming with large apertures in bright light, external ND filters or a matte box are necessary.
- The sensor uses an electronic rolling shutter and not a global shutter. As a result, rapid camera movements or fast-moving subjects can cause rolling shutter distortion.
- The camera does not have an SDI connection . Professional video output is limited to HDMI, meaning an HDMI-to-SDI converter may be required for certain broadcast workflows.
- There is only one internal CFexpress Type B slot . Therefore, there is no second internal card slot for relay recording or simultaneous backup recording.
- The camera records internally primarily in Blackmagic RAW; the H.264 files are intended as a proxy workflow and not as a replacement for an extensive selection of traditional internal production codecs.
- No integrated IP streaming functionality is specified.
- The camera has no built-in GPS.
- Bluetooth is intended for remote control and not for wireless video transmission.
- The 5-inch monitor can be tilted, but is not a fully freely rotatable vari-angle screen.
- The camera has no built-in electronic viewfinder. For productions where an EVF is necessary, a separate monitoring solution is required.
- The L-mount allows for many lens combinations, but electronic functions with adapted EF, PL, or other lenses depend on the adapter and the lens used.
- The camera is primarily optimized for a cinema and post-production workflow. For run-and-gun ENG productions, the lack of internal ND filters, SDI, and IBIS can be significant practical disadvantages.
