Features

The Sony FX5 Cinema Camera is a compact full-frame Cinema Line camera that combines professional cinematic capabilities with a relatively light and portable body. Positioned between the compact FX3 and the more traditionally equipped FX6, the camera was developed for filmmakers who require high image quality, extensive recording formats, and professional handling without having to immediately upgrade to a larger cinema camera.

At its heart is a newly developed 16.6-megapixel 5K full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor . The stacked architecture ensures fast sensor readout and helps limit rolling shutter effects during motion. Combined with the BIONZ XR2 image processor and integrated AI processing, the FX5 features advanced autofocus, subject recognition, and automatic white balance.

An important addition is in-house X-OCN recording . The FX5 can record in-house up to 5K 59.94p in Sony's X-OCN format, including 5K Open Gate in 3:2. This allows a larger portion of the sensor to be used and creates extra room for reframing, vertical cropping, various aspect ratios, and VFX workflows.

For fast action and slow motion, the camera also supports UHD 4K recording at up to 120 fps .

This version comes with the Sony XLR-H2 XLR Handle Unit . This adds two professional XLR/TRS combo inputs and enables the FX5 to support 32-bit float audio recording, among other features.

Operation

The FX5 is built around a 35.9 × 24 mm full-frame stacked CMOS sensor with an effective resolution of 4992 × 3328 pixels. The stacked construction enables faster readout than conventional sensors and is particularly important for fast-moving subjects, handheld camera work, and high frame rates.

The camera uses Sony's BIONZ XR2 image processor , which also has an integrated AI processing unit. This is used for intelligent subject recognition and autofocus, among other things. The autofocus system features 759 phase-detection points and can recognize and track people, animals, and birds.

5K Open Gate

One of the most important features of the FX5 is 5K Open Gate recording in 3:2 .

Instead of capturing only a traditional 16:9 crop of the sensor, virtually the entire sensor surface can be used. The maximum internal Open Gate resolution is 4992 × 3328 at up to 59.94 fps.

Open Gate offers more freedom during post-processing. For example, different sections can be made from the same shot for:

• 16:9 video

• vertical 9:16 content

• square social media formats

• widescreen cinema formats

• reframing and stabilization

• visual-effects workflows

This makes the FX5 particularly interesting for productions where the same source material needs to be used for multiple distribution platforms.

Internal X-OCN image

The FX5 brings Sony's X-OCN workflow from the high-end CineAlta series to a compact Cinema Line camera.

X-OCN stands for eXtended tonal range Original Camera Negative and is designed to retain much of the flexibility of RAW shooting while keeping file size more manageable.

The FX5 supports various X-OCN variants:

• X-OCN LT – highest quality of the available FX5 options and intended for film, television, commercials, high-quality documentaries, among others.

• X-OCN C1 – higher compression for longer recording times and general professional production

• X-OCN C2 – stronger compression when storage capacity and long recording duration are a priority

The X-OCN LT supports internal 16-bit recording up to 5K 59.94p.

As a result, a great deal of image information remains available for color correction and extensive post-production without the need for an external RAW recorder.

Triple Base ISO and Dynamic Range

The FX5 features three Base ISO settings:

• ISO 800

• ISO 4000

• ISO 12.800

Which Base ISO is available depends in part on the selected color space.

The additional ISO 4000 base forms an intermediate step between normal and high-light-sensitive shooting, thereby offering more flexibility for productions with varying lighting conditions.

Sony specifies a dynamic range of approximately 15 stops , rising to 16 stops in Sensor Overdrive Mode .

This allows the camera to simultaneously preserve detail in bright highlights and dark shadows, which is particularly important for S-Log3 and X-OCN workflows.

4K high frame rate

In addition to 5K Open Gate, the FX5 supports internal 3840 × 2160 UHD recording up to 120 fps .

This allows high-quality slow-motion footage to be made for, among other things:

• sport

• commercials

• music videos

• nature productions

• events

• creative film productions

Even higher frame rates are available for Full HD.

AI autofocus

The integrated AI processing unit is used to recognize and track subjects more intelligently.

The system combines this recognition with 759 phase-detection autofocus points . As a result, the FX5 can continue to track moving subjects without the camera operator having to continuously focus manually.

This is particularly useful for documentaries, events, interviews, gimbal work, and productions with small camera crews.

Image stabilization

Unlike the FX6, the FX5 features built-in 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization .

Additionally, Dynamic Active Mode is available for more dynamic handheld camera work. This uses additional electronic stabilization to further correct movement.

The combination makes the camera suitable for handheld, run-and-gun, and gimbal productions where an external stabilizer is not always available.

Professional monitoring

On the back is a 3.5" 16:9 touchscreen LCD with a resolution of 2,764,800 dots.

The screen has a 4-axis construction, allowing it to be positioned from various shooting positions.

The FX5 also features professional monitoring functions such as:

As a result, fewer external monitoring tools are needed for many productions.

Professional audio with XLR-H2

This version of the FX5 comes with the Sony XLR-H2 XLR Handle Unit .

The handle adds two XLR/TRS combo inputs with +48V phantom power and makes professional microphone and line signals available directly on the camera.

In combination with the XLR-H2, the FX5 also supports 32-bit float audio recording . The wide dynamic range of 32-bit float reduces the risk of unusable audio due to incorrectly set recording levels.

The camera supports up to four audio channels, including:

• 24-bit / 48 kHz

• 24-bit / 96 kHz

• 32-bit / 48 kHz

• 32-bit / 96 kHz

Additionally, a 3.5mm microphone input and a 3.5mm headphone output are present on the camera body.

Network and livestreaming

The FX5 is not exclusively a cinema recorder. The camera also features integrated IP streaming.

Supported protocols are:

Streaming is possible in H.264 with resolutions from 720p to UHD 4K .

In addition, the camera features:

• Gigabit Ethernet via RJ45

• Wi-Fi 6

• two USB-C ports

Via Sony's Monitor & Control app, supported settings can be adjusted, files viewed, and a live view displayed on an Android or iOS device.

Limits

Despite the extensive capabilities, there are some important differences compared to larger Cinema Line cameras such as the FX6.

• No built-in ND filter: the FX5 does not feature Sony's electronic variable ND system. Therefore, lens filters or a matte box with ND filters are required for outdoor shots.

• No SDI output: professional video output is via full-size HDMI. Therefore, a converter may be required for direct integration into certain broadcast and SDI workflows.

• No global shutter: the camera uses an electronic rolling shutter. The stacked sensor reduces rolling shutter effects, but does not eliminate them completely.

• Video-only camera: the FX5 is designed for video and does not feature the full photo functionality of Sony Alpha cameras.

• CFexpress Type A required for the heaviest workflows: although both slots also support SDXC UHS-II, high bitrates and certain recording modes may require faster CFexpress Type A media.

• No internal storage: recording takes place on memory cards.

• The XLR-H2 and optional DVF-EL1 cannot be used simultaneously: the position of the connections ensures that the XLR Handle Unit and the dedicated electronic viewfinder are physically mutually exclusive.

• Older XLR-H1 not compatible: the XLR handle of the FX3, among others, cannot be used on the FX5.

• Timecode via adapter: a separate USB-C to BNC timecode adapter is required for connection to traditional BNC timecode equipment.
