Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Mini Monitor 12G
Features
The Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Mini Monitor 12G is a compact professional Thunderbolt 4 playback interface that allows video images from a computer to be displayed on professional HDMI and SDI monitors. The device is designed for editors, colorists, motion graphics artists, and broadcast professionals who require accurate video signal output during editing, color correction, and live productions.
The UltraStudio Mini Monitor 12G supports SD, HD, and Ultra HD up to 2160p60 via both HDMI 2.0 and 12G-SDI. Furthermore, thanks to the two independent 12G-SDI outputs, the system can generate Fill & Key signals for professional broadcast graphics with transparency. This allows titles, logos, and animations to be inserted directly from software such as DaVinci Resolve or Adobe After Effects into a live production via a compatible video mixer.
Power and video communication are handled via a single Thunderbolt 4 cable, eliminating the need for an external power supply. This makes the UltraStudio Mini Monitor 12G particularly suitable for mobile editing suites, color correction suites, and compact broadcast installations.

Operation
The UltraStudio Mini Monitor 12G functions as an external professional video output for Thunderbolt 4 computers.
During video editing or color correction, the image is sent directly from the software to the UltraStudio. The device then converts this into a broadcast-grade HDMI or 12G-SDI signal for display on professional reference monitors, video walls, or broadcast equipment. This allows the image to be displayed without the limitations of a standard computer monitor or graphics card.
An important advantage of this model is the support for two independent 12G-SDI outputs . These can be used as Fill & Key outputs , where one output contains the video image and the second output the alpha channel. Compatible live production switchers, such as Blackmagic ATEM models, can combine both signals so that graphics and animations are superimposed on the live video signal in real time with transparency. The hardware automatically converts RGBA graphics to a professional 10-bit YUV 4:2:2:4 Fill & Key signal , without additional software conversion.
As a result, the UltraStudio Mini Monitor 12G is suitable not only for video monitoring, but also for professional broadcast graphics, virtual studios, and live events.
Application
The UltraStudio Mini Monitor 12G is suitable for:
Video editing
Color correction
Broadcast monitoring
HDR monitoring
Motion graphics
Live productions
Fill & Key workflows
Virtual studios
Broadcast graphics
Studio broadcasts
Post-production
Professional reference monitoring
For colorists, the UltraStudio Mini Monitor 12G offers reliable video output to professional HDR and SDR monitors. Broadcast companies can use the device for real-time graphic overlays, while motion graphics artists send transparent animations directly to a production switcher. Thanks to its compact size, the device is also suitable for mobile control rooms and OB vans.
Limits
Although the UltraStudio Mini Monitor 12G offers many professional features, there are a few points to consider:
This model is intended exclusively for video output (playback) and does not have video inputs .
For video recording, the UltraStudio Mini Recorder 12G or UltraStudio Mini Replay 12G is required.
There are no analog video or audio connections available.
A computer with Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 is required for use.
The device contains no internal recorder or storage.
Streaming protocols such as SRT, RTMP, or NDI are not supported; the UltraStudio functions exclusively as a professional video output.
The Fill & Key functionality requires a video mixer or graphics system that supports external key signals.
There is no built-in video scaler or video processor; the connected software determines the outgoing video signal.
