The Sony PXW-FX9 features a full-frame, oversampled 6K Exmor R CMOS sensor that lets you capture 4K footage with cinematic depth of field. The camera’s E-mount is constructed of stainless steel and allows for the use of E-mount lenses.
The PXW-FX9 includes 12G/6G-SDI and HDMI outputs for 4K video, a 3G-SDI output for HD, and genlock and timecode for use in a multi-camera setup. The Fast Hybrid AF autofocus system ensures precise focusing and even enables face detection to automatically detect human shapes with 561 detection points. Advanced image stabilization is achieved using the PXW-FX9’s internal gyroscope for footage so smooth it’ll look like you’re using a gimbal. Thanks to 4-channel audio recording, you can use external microphones while simultaneously recording ambient sound with the internal mics.
6K CMOS Exmor R sensor
The PXW-FX9’s oversampled full-frame 6K sensor enables recording in DCI 4K, UHD, and HD resolutions. Powerful image processing with debayering and downsampling achieves image quality that exceeds the limits of conventional Super 35mm sensors. The back-illuminated CMOS image sensor also employs Sony’s Exmor R technology for improved sensitivity and noise reduction. Compared to a 4K Super 35mm sensor, the FX9’s 6K sensor has more than twice the surface area and offers a wider angle of view and shallower depth of field.
15 stops of dynamic range
The FX9 offers exceptional 15+ stops of dynamic range and supports Dynamic HDR and Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) modes, providing creative freedom in colour grading and post-production. Operators can concentrate on framing the scene they want, confident that the FX9 will capture every nuance and detail with 4K 4:2:2 10-bit internal recording.
S-Cinetone
S-Cinetone is the FX9’s standard look, tailored to the demands of today’s content creators with rich mid-tones, attractive facial tones and a softer tone, developed with the same expertise as Sony’s flagship VENICE digital cinema camera. S-Cinetone means content looks fresh and vibrant straight out of the camera, with subjects that really stand out, while still leaving plenty of room for post-production thanks to the powerful full-frame image sensor.
Double base ISO
In addition to its wide dynamic range, the FX9 features enhanced color and lighting capabilities, including a dual base ISO of 800/4000 with a maximum ISO of 102,400, useful in low light or when using slower lenses. The base sensitivity of ISO 800 offers the optimum dynamic range for typical documentary applications, such as shooting outdoors or in brightly lit interiors. A secondary high base sensitivity of ISO 4000 excels in low-light conditions such as early morning and evening shots, while maintaining excellent image quality when using slower lenses. The FX9's extended ISO range is 320 to 102,400.
3D LUTs and HLG
Customize the look of your FX9 by importing and saving up to 16 LUT files, which you can use to preview your look. The FX9 can record HDR in S-Log3 or HLG (hybrid log gamma). S-Log3 offers optimized recording with maximum dynamic range and color grading options, while HLG offers fast content delivery without additional color grading for everyday workflows.
16-bit raw via XDCA-FX9 unit
Use the FX9 with the optional XDCA-FX9 expansion unit to take full advantage of the 15+ stops of dynamic range with 16-bit raw output in 2K or 4K using a single BNC cable with a compatible external recorder. The XDCA-FX9 expansion unit also adds advanced networking capabilities for streaming/file transfer and a slot for a wireless audio receiver.
HDR/SDR dual support
The FX9’s EVF can be easily switched between HDR and SDR emulation modes when capturing HDR content. When adjusting the brightness of the image in SDR emulation, the SDR gain dB is recorded as metadata, allowing it to be used in post-production with the SDR content. Together, these changes make it easier to shoot in HDR while quickly producing SDR content.
Electronic ND filter
Sony’s built-in 7-stop electronic variable neutral density (ND) filter can be set to auto, or you can manually adjust the filter density in smooth increments from 1/4 to 1/128 while shooting, creating perfectly exposed images without affecting depth of field as lighting conditions change. Use higher density settings and slower shutter speeds for artistic effects.
Media and recording formats
The FX9 records 10-bit 4:2:2 to dual XQD media card slots which support simultaneous and relay recording, as well as multiple backup recording modes using proxy files. Depending on the project, the FX9 has a selection of recording formats. XAVC-I with 422 10-bit quality at a higher 600 Mbps in 60p. XAVC-Long for longer recording time in smaller file sizes. The traditional MPEG HD codec is also available. The camera can internally record UHD (3840 x 2160) and HD (1920 x 1080) at a selectable frame rate from 1 fps to 60 fps in XAVC-I, XAVC-Long and MPEG HD formats.
Adjustable frame rates
Choose your preferred frame rate from 1 to 60 fps for fast and slow motion footage. The FX9 creates an immersive image with a wide-angle look and shallow depth of field thanks to the full-frame sensor combined with fast and slow motion. The camera also offers a Quality Priority setting that maximises image quality of Full HD slow motion with advanced oversampling technology.
Fast Hybrid AF
Effortlessly track fast-moving subjects with pin-sharp focus, even when using wide lens aperture settings to maintain a shallow depth of field, using the camera’s full-frame sensor. Enhanced Fast Hybrid AF combines phase-detection AF for fast, precise subject tracking with contrast AF for exceptional focusing accuracy. Additionally, Face Detection intelligently recognizes and focuses on human faces. The dedicated 561-point phase-detection AF sensor covers approximately 94% of the total width of the image area and 96% of its height, enabling consistently accurate, responsive AF tracking even with fast-moving subjects.
Seven levels of AF transition speeds, from switching between subjects as quickly as possible to slowly, where the speed is reduced to suit a more measured shooting style, such as a period TV drama.
The five-level AF sensitivity ranges from locked, which ignores other moving subjects in the frame, to responsive, which shifts focus from one subject to another – ideal for shooting between race cars as they speed past.
Advanced image stabilization
Thanks to advanced image stabilization information, even handheld footage can be transformed in post-production using Sony Catalyst Browse/Catalyst Prepare software so it looks as smooth as if it were shot with a gimbal. Unlike in-camera or in-lens stabilization, metadata generated by the FX9’s built-in gyroscope lets you creatively choose the amount of shake compensation and resolution of cropped 4K footage. This feature is also compatible with any E-mount lens and enables much faster processing than conventional NLE stabilization workflows.
4-channel audio recording
The FX9 offers audio capabilities with independent controls for each channel. In applications such as interviews, 4-channel audio recording allows simultaneous use of an external microphone for recording ambient sounds and the built-in microphone for ambient sounds and operator voice memos.
Inputs and outputs
The FX9 is equipped with multiple outputs, including a 12G-SDI and HDMI for 4K output. It also has a 3G-SDI for HD output to expand monitoring flexibility. For multi-camera use, Genlock and TC In/Out connectors are available.
Recording modes
The FX9 has a selection of backup recording modes to help keep your footage safe. Simul Rec allows simultaneous HD recording to two media cards. 4K/HD Sub Rec mode allows 4K recording to one card and MPEG HD recording to the other. XAVC Proxy Rec is also available, providing a small 9Mb/s proxy file that can be easily sent over the network. Additionally, a maximum Cache Rec of 28 seconds is available to help prevent missed shots.
Multi-Interface (MI) shoe
Sony's flexible Multi-Interface (MI) shoe provides power, signal connections, and coordinated on/off switching with compatible Sony accessories.
Remotely control 4K multi-camera
The FX9 supports the S700 protocol via Ethernet for simple, user-friendly multi-camera control for local events and TV studio productions. The optional XDCA-FX9 expansion unit with RJ45 connection can receive the S700 protocol using a single RCP unit, or you can control multiple FX9 cameras with a PoE switch using one RCP unit per FX9. A/V output via SDI can be routed through a standard SDI switcher, and a monitor such as the PVM-X2400 can display up to four HD inputs simultaneously.
Network connection for high mobility
With internal 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, the FX9 offers wireless features such as smartphone or tablet control using the Content Browser Mobile app, FTP file transfer, clip trimming to avoid transferring unnecessary content, and access to the C3 Portal for uploading both high-resolution and proxy footage to the cloud. The FX9 also offers a wired LAN port, dual-link mobile for a reliable connection, and Sony QoS live streaming via an optional Network RX Station.
Proven ergonomics and accessory compatibility
The FX9’s chassis is a refinement of the FS7’s ergonomic design, enabling comfortable shooting in virtually any position and compatibility with a broad range of FS7 accessories, including U-series batteries, chargers, E-mount lenses and more. The FX9’s magnesium body is both rugged and lightweight, the control arm and Smart Grip are easy to position, and the buttons, dials and other parts are sealed to resist dust and splashes of water.
Fast menu operation via touchscreen
Get quick access to frequently used functions using the FX9’s touchscreen LCD viewfinder. The control menu will be familiar to VENICE users, offering controls for codec, scan mode, base ISO/sensitivity, recording mode, audio levels and other settings.
